On the 9th day of the bright fortnight of Chaitra month, Ramnavmi is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Rama. Rama was Lord Vishnu himself, incarcerated on earth to destroy Ravana. He was well accomplished, beautiful and endowed with royal marks. His glory and prowess were unlimited. He was peerless on earth.
Ramnavmi is one of the most important festivals of Hindus and on this special day, devotees repeat the name of Lord Rama with their every breath and vow to lead a righteous life. People pray to god to attain a blessed life through intense devotion towards Lord Rama and invoke him for his blessings and protection. It is believed that a true devotee of Lord Rama is his representative, with his power and his knowledge. People pray best for each other and they say wishes for Ram Navmi.
Many people observe a strict fast on this day. Also, the festival is an extremely colourful ceremony, highly inspiring and instructive too. The Hindu temples are decorated with lightings and flowers, and the image of Lord Rama is richly adorned. People read and chant the holy Ramayana in temples and as well as at their homes.
In Ayodhya, which is the birthplace of Lord Rama, a big fair is held on this day as part of the celebration. In southern parts of India, the Sri Ramnavmi Utsavam is celebrated for nine days with great zeal and devotion. For whole nine days, people wake up early in the morning at 4 and sing devotional songs, along with chants of Rama till late at night. People greet each other on this day with Ramnavmi wishes.
